Remus Lupin is not a feeble Wizard.

This is the man who, right after waking up, could non-verbally, without a wand, conjure a ball of flame, and then tell a Dementor to sod off. This is the only Order member save Dumbledore who was still standing at the Department of Mysteries. This is a spy and soldier who lived through the First War, and most of the Second.

He is not a damsel in distress. He does not need Sirius or anyone else to look out for him constantly. He is powerful, intelligent, and enduring. At the top of his game he is a force to be reckoned with.

Please stop forgetting or ignoring that.

Peace loving doesn't mean weak minded, physically weak or emotionally weak. It does not mean the person in question is an idiot. It doesn't even necessarily mean they are naive. It also doesn't mean they aren't willing to get into a physical altercation, or even start a war.

There are a lot of people who are damned ready to kill for peace. There are terrorists/freedom fighters ready to die for it, start wars for it, commit genocide for it. These people are dedicated, many strong willed, intelligent, logical (I.e. sociopaths) people. (Edit: I mean this in it's most extreme form, not in general)

Going the less crazy route, peaceful people include the Dali Lama and Ghandi, Karl Marx, Lenin*. They may have had wildly different views on how to attain it, but these people believed in peace, at least as an end result.

So next time you're writing a fic, please think about canon characterization before you write a peace loving character as any kind of weak.

*Edit2: As many people appear to be confused, here I'll clarify. I don't necessarily agree with his tctics, nor am I saying he wasn't nuts, I'm just saying that right or not, sane or not, he thought what he was doing was the way to go.

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

I'm listening to: Dhoom: Salaame
So I like to listen to a lot of Asian music, and sometimes I'll check random CD compilations out of the library. I was listening to one earlier today and came across a song I really liked called "Kunglim Guli" but I can't figure out what language it's in. According to Wikipedia, the singer (Yulduz Usmonova) sings in multiple languages (Uzbek, Turkish, Persian, Uyghur, and Russian). I'd really like to know what the title means, and Google Translate wasn't really enough help (didn't detect the first word but said the second was Lithuanian for "lie"). Any takers? Thanks.

This is just a little thing but I've seen it enough times to get on my nerves.

In Torchwood canon, the Hub is big. Especially if you look on a map of Roald Dahl Plass - the tourist office entrance is right down by the water, while the main room is directly under the water tower at the other end of the Plass. Big.

We've never seen them in canon, but fanon seems to agree that the Hub has communal showers for when they get dirty and covered with goo etc on missions. Makes sense. So you have a big secret alien-fighting sci-fi super base under Cardiff with a fairly decent sized room of showers and a whole pile of alien and future technology that they adapt to help themselves out.

So why is it that every time two people get up to hijinks in the shower the hot water runs out after they're done? My hot water doesn't even run out that quickly*, and I live in a house, not a secret underground base. Somehow, I don't think Torchwood has a smaller hot water tank than I do.

*(and sometimes the hijinks are over pretty soon because the characters cannot control their lustful feelings)

tl;dr people are capable of leaving the shower without the hot water running out, kthx.

Okay, so when you rate your fic as "PG-13" and say that the genre is "family", the least thing that people will except for you to post about is a mother having sex with her two sons. It just--- maybe some people can appreciate it, even if regardless of their real age, in the fic her sons are 14, but it doesn't hurt to put a warning for all the 99,5% that find it disturbing - really disturbing.

I know you've grown up with photography all around, but when you've got photos dating back to the 1600s, it's either an AU with alterations to the development of technology, or you're doing it wrong.

Mostly geared towards Hetalia fandom because, yes, I know it can be cute to have pictures of England and colonial!America lying around, but a painting, engraving or drawing can work just as well, if not better. No, really. Try it.

I'm fairly fluent in Portuguese, but as I'm raising my 12-month old son, I've begun to realize that my "baby vocabulary" is lacking. For example, I don't know how to play "Peekaboo" in Portuguese. I've settled on saying "Cadê o Kiernan?? Aí está!" but that doesn't feel quite right.

So this has gotten me thinking about baby games in other languages. Peekaboo is the only game that I can think of at the moment, but for curiosity's sake, how do you say/play "peekaboo" in other languages? I'm specifically looking for Portuguese, but I'm interested in other languages too. Also, what other baby games do you know in other languages?

ETA: I suppose there's also the song "Trot, trot, trot to Boston Town, see little baby falling down!" I know there won't be a direct translation of the song, but how does one play a bouncing-on-knee game in Portuguese or other languages?

Need urgent help, please.

I'm editing a Ukrainian translation of a 'Ghost Whisperer' episode for TV. Here's a piece of dialogue from it (between Melinda and a detective who was acquainted with a deceased woman whose ghost Melinda is helping):

- You were telling her about your first arrest.
- She told you that? It was just a purse snatcher. I chased him into this lake and collared him about chest-deep in water.
- And for 2 weeks after that, you had flippers in your locker and wet wings on your desk.
- She laughed so hard.

What kind of 'wings' could those be? (The translator just rendered it literally).

Thanks everyone in advance.

UPD: SOLVED.

So, Hetalia-fans, you want to create some Original Characters, Hetalia-based of the countries that haven't been shown. Hey, cool for you! It's a good exercise in research and creativity.

However, want my advice? Here is the very first thing you should do if you want to creat an OC about, oh, I dunno. 'Africa-tan', like a certain fan told me.

The very first thing you should do?

Buy yourself an Atlas and learn that Africa? Refers to a whole continent with over 50 countries within, and thus, your plan about writing an 'Africa-tan'? Not gonna happen. It would be like creating 'Europe-tan' or 'American Continent-tan'.

Maps and research. In this fandom more than in any other one, they are your friends. At the very least? In Geography.

My husband just linked me to this article/post, which I found quite interesting, and relevant to this comm, so I thought I'd share it with you guys.

Legos & language

Quick summary to decide if you want to click:
A father and son use Legos frequently; son has friend over and they have minor incident over the "name" of a type of piece - father realizes children tend to name them, but clearly different children choose different names - makes a simple survey of a few children to compare what they call all the pieces.

It sounds a little dull from that, but it really was an interesting read, and some surprising differences & similarities arise in the children's naming. Check it out. =)

Dear UK Supernatural ficcers,

This doesn't happen a lot, but when it does - damn, it's jarring.

I run across a fic that's friggin' awesome...right until someone starts talking. Usually, it's Dean. Ya see, one thing Dean Winchester shouldn't ever sound like is very, very, very British. Seriously. I doubt he's going to use "whilst" or "Indeed" unless he's going for humor or sarcasm, and I'm pretty sure he's not going to refer to male friends as "mates" or "boys" or use terms like "bloody hell"...or just basically sound like he just rolled in from a posh boarding school and it off to the polo match after tea.

"Sammy, go look down the alley whilst I go chat up the waitress."

No, dude. Just...no.

You populate canon setting with bunch of OCs. And they have friends and romantic interests with another OCs while canon characters are mentioned in passing.

I have a question. Who cares about your OCs? Seriously, who cares? We all here in fandom to read about our favorite canon characters, not OCs. No, really.

But it’s not the point. About your magical pregnancy device and my confusion )

ETA: I don't mind OCs in general. I like when it's done in appropriate manner and OCs have their place and voice in universe. In another words, if you write fic where main characters are canon characters, don't make your OCs to occupy all of space. Write another story about them.

Edit due to yet another language fail.

Is asking that writers for a fandom watch a few episodes, with special attention paid to how various characters address each other, really too much to ask?

Every single 'fic I've read tonight has snapped me out of the story by having some character refer to another character by his given name when in canon he would have used his surname, or with honorifics that the characters don't use with each other in canon, or even with weird nicknames that seem to have come from nowhere.

And maybe I'm just picky, but it irritates me. How can you watch a show without picking up on how the characters address one another? I don't even write for this fandom, really, but I've certainly picked up enough to want to attack a few 'fics with red pen...

On a sort of related note, if a character in an anime fandom has an English word for a name, and you feel like you have to spell it the way it's pronounced in the show instead of the way the word is spelled in English... please be consistant with your spelling. Remembering that you're calling a character something other than what I'm expecting is hard enough without having to be on the lookout for multiple unexpected spellings.
